How to File ITR-1 Online for AY 2024-25 — Step-by-Step
ITR-1 (Sahaj) is the simplest income tax return form for salaried individuals. Here is a complete step-by-step guide to filing it online for Assessment Year 2024-25, along with documents needed, deductions to claim, and common mistakes to avoid.
Who Can File ITR-1 (Sahaj)?
ITR-1 is for resident individuals with straightforward income. You can use it if all of the following apply:
- Income from salary or pension only
- Income from one house property (not a loss carried forward)
- Other income (savings interest, etc.) up to ₹5,000
- Total income does not exceed ₹50 lakh
- Agricultural income up to ₹5,000
Who CANNOT File ITR-1?
Do NOT use ITR-1 if you have any of the following — use ITR-2, ITR-3 or ITR-4 instead:
- Capital gains from shares, mutual funds, property, or any other asset
- Income from business or profession
- More than one house property
- Foreign income or assets outside India
- Director in any company
- Unlisted equity shares held at any time during the year
- Total income exceeding ₹50 lakh
Documents Required Before You Start
- PAN Card — your login ID on the IT portal
- Aadhaar — linked to PAN (mandatory for e-verification)
- Form 16 — issued by employer (Part A + Part B)
- Form 26AS — download from IT portal; shows all TDS credits
- Annual Information Statement (AIS) — shows all financial transactions reported against your PAN
- Bank statements — for interest income from savings/FD accounts
- Investment proofs — for 80C, 80D, HRA, NPS deductions
- Rent receipts — if claiming HRA exemption
Step-by-Step: How to File ITR-1 Online
Step 1 — Login to Income Tax Portal
Visit incometax.gov.in and login using your PAN as user ID and your registered password. If you haven't registered, create an account first using your PAN and Aadhaar.
Step 2 — Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return
From the dashboard, click e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return. Select Assessment Year 2024-25 and mode as Online.
Step 3 — Select ITR-1
Click "Start New Filing," select "Individual" as status, and choose ITR-1 from the form list. The portal will ask a few questions to confirm the correct form — answer accordingly.
Step 4 — Verify Pre-Filled Data
The portal pre-fills your salary, TDS, and some deductions from Form 26AS and AIS. Review everything carefully — pre-filled data sometimes has errors. Cross-check salary figures against your Form 16 Part B.
Step 5 — Fill Deductions (This Is Where You Save Tax)
- Section 80C: PPF, ELSS, EPF, LIC, home loan principal, children's tuition — up to ₹1,50,000
- Section 80D: Health insurance premium for self, spouse, children and parents
- HRA Exemption: If you live in rented accommodation — enter actual HRA received, rent paid, and city
- Section 24(b): Home loan interest — up to ₹2,00,000 for self-occupied property
- Section 80CCD(1B): NPS contribution — additional ₹50,000 over 80C limit
- Standard Deduction: ₹75,000 is auto-applied for salaried
Step 6 — Choose Old vs New Tax Regime
The portal will show you tax liability under both regimes. Compare carefully — if your total deductions are significant (80C + 80D + HRA + home loan), the Old Regime often saves more tax. The New Regime offers lower slabs but no major deductions.
Step 7 — Verify Tax Payable or Refund
Review the tax computation summary. If there is outstanding tax to pay, use the "Pay Now" button (Challan 280). If you're due a refund, ensure your correct bank account (pre-validated) is selected for the refund credit.
Step 8 — Preview and Submit
Review the entire return once more on the preview screen. Check all figures, deductions, and regime selection. Once satisfied, click Submit.
Step 9 — e-Verify Your Return
You must e-verify within 30 days of filing, otherwise the return is treated as not filed. Options:
- Aadhaar OTP — fastest and easiest (instant)
- Net Banking — login to your bank and verify
- Bank ATM — generate EVC via ATM
- DSC — Digital Signature Certificate (for businesses)
Step 10 — Download ITR-V Acknowledgement
After verification, download your ITR-V acknowledgement from the portal (under e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns). Save this PDF — it is your official proof of filing.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using an unvalidated bank account — refund will fail
- Forgetting to report all savings interest income (SB interest, FD interest)
- Not cross-checking Form 26AS vs Form 16 — TDS mismatch causes notices
- Missing the HRA claim if you live in a rented house
- Not comparing Old vs New Regime — choosing the wrong one costs you money
- Filing after the deadline — late fee under Section 234F up to ₹5,000
